If you’re looking for something a little different, choose a Pristella Tetra or Pristella maxillaris. These striking fish are hard to miss and are guaranteed to make a splash in any community tank. Their remarkable translucent body has coined them the alternative nickname of “X-Ray Tetra," and with black, white and neon yellow striped fins they are a truly memorable fish.
Pristella Tetras are known for their beautiful appearance and low-maintenance care
requirements. These little fish have vibrant personalities and a peaceful temperament, great for pairing with similar-sized tankmates and other peaceful Tetras. Naturally schooling, Tetras prefer to live in groups of six or more and can be found exploring their environment sticking close by to their fellow Pristella Tetras.
A fun and hardy fish, Pristella Tetras live up to five years with proper care, and are an
excellent option for beginners and intermediate owners. Due to their migration habits,
Pristella Tetras are highly adaptable but can scare easily so ensure your tank is set up to
help reduce stress.
Native to the coastal rivers of South America, Pristella Tetras are used to living in more
brackish waters but are highly adaptable to various water conditions. The standard tropical biotope is preferred, featuring ample rocks, driftwood, caves and plants to provide safe hiding spaces around the perimeter, with enough space in the middle for free swimming.
Tetras are naturally omnivorous, feeding predominantly on small invertebrates,
crustacea, algae, and fruit. We feed a mix of live foods including live baby brine shrimp, blackworms, bloodworms, and Daphnia. We supplement their diet with Northfin Veggie, Community, and Bug Pro to ensure a balanced and nutritious diet.
