The Flame Tetra, Hyphessobrycon flammeus, is a bright, colorful freshwater fish that brings a beautiful orange and yellow glow to a peaceful community aquarium. Also known as the Von Rio Flame Tetra, this species has been loved in the aquarium hobby for years thanks to its color, hardiness, and easygoing personality.
Flame Tetras stay small, usually reaching around 2 inches as adults, but they really stand out when kept in a group. Their warm orange body color looks especially good in planted tanks, darker aquascapes, and setups with driftwood or botanicals.
One of the reasons the Von Rio Flame Tetra is such a great beginner fish is its ability to adapt to a wide range of water parameters. They are peaceful, active, and do best in groups of 6 or more. The larger the group, the more comfortable they feel, and the better their natural schooling behavior looks in the tank.
While Flame Tetras are peaceful community fish, we would not recommend them for shrimp breeding tanks. They may leave larger adult shrimp alone, but baby shrimp are small enough to become an easy snack. If you are trying to grow a shrimp colony, this probably is not the best fish to add.
The Orange Von Rio Flame Tetra does well with other peaceful community fish like rasboras, corydoras, small tetras, danios, and other nonaggressive tank mates. They enjoy a planted aquarium with both open swimming space and areas to explore.
We feed our Flame Tetras a mix of frozen, live, and prepared foods including live baby brine shrimp, frozen daphnia, frozen baby brine, cyclops, and NorthFin flake foods.
