The Neolamprologus Multifasciatus, often affectionately referred to as "Multies" in the aquarist community, are among the world's smallest cichlids. These captivating shell-dwelling creatures typically reach just 1-2 inches in length, making them ideal for even the coziest of aquariums. Don't let their small size fool you, though – they boast outsized charm and personality!
Multies are native to the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika in Africa, which is renowned for its incredible biodiversity. Their striking coloration and distinctive stripes add a splash of vibrancy to any aquarium. With variations that include shades of yellow, black, and white, you can curate your own dazzling mini-rainbow beneath the surface.
Multies are known for their remarkable social behavior. They form tight-knit communities and create intricate burrow systems in the sandy substrate, turning your aquarium into a bustling neighborhood. Their communal behavior is a delight to observe, making them a fascinating addition to any tank.
These little marvels are incredibly hardy and low-maintenance. They adapt well to various water conditions, and their modest size means they don't demand much space. A 20 gallon or larger tank with a temperature range of 74-82°F and slightly alkaline water conditions is ideal, but Multi's are forgiving and can thrive in a range of setups. Make sure you have sand and plenty of shells for these shell-dwellers to call home!
They have an interesting community dynamic, so it's best to start with a group of 4 or more. Multies can also coexist peacefully with other small, non-aggressive fish species that share their water preferences.
