The lavender gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus), a variety of the three-spot gourami, is a peaceful and hardy freshwater fish perfect for beginner and experienced aquarists alike. Known for its soft lavender hue, this fish thrives in community tanks with other calm species. With a mature size of up to 5 inches, the lavender gourami requires an aquarium of at least 20 gallons. Larger setups are preferred when keeping multiple individuals or a mixed-gender group.
Lavender gouramis enjoy densely planted aquascapes with hiding spots like driftwood or rocks, complemented by floating plants to create shaded areas. These unique fish are also known for their ability to breathe air directly. Their calm temperament allows them to coexist with tetras, rasboras, and other non-aggressive species, but it's best to avoid tankmates that nip fins or outcompete for food.
1. What tank size is best for lavender gouramis?
A single lavender gourami requires a tank of at least 20 gallons. For groups, a larger tank is recommended to ensure enough swimming space and to minimize territorial behavior.
2. Are lavender gouramis peaceful?
Yes, they are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially males, during breeding or in smaller tanks. They are best kept with other calm fish like tetras, rasboras, and corydoras.
3. What do lavender gouramis eat?
These omnivores enjoy a diet of high-quality pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Occasionally offering vegetable-based foods is also beneficial.
4. Can I keep more than one lavender gourami in the same tank?
Yes, but it’s best to keep one male with multiple females or in groups of four or more to minimize aggression. Providing a larger tank with plenty of hiding spots is key for success.
5. How do I differentiate between male and female lavender gouramis?
Males tend to have brighter colors, longer dorsal fins, and a slimmer body shape, while females are rounder and slightly duller in coloration.
6. What are good tankmates for lavender gouramis?
They get along well with other peaceful species like harlequin rasboras, neon tetras, and kuhli loaches. Avoid fin-nipping fish like barbs and aggressive tankmates like cichlids.
7. Are lavender gouramis hardy fish?
Yes, they are resilient and adaptable, making them suitable for beginners. However, they still require stable water parameters and good tank maintenance to thrive.
We feed our fish a mix of frozen, live and prepared foods including daphnia, baby brine and cyclops. We also supplement their diet with a mix of Northfin Veggie and Community.
