The Calico Blue Coral Platy or Xiphophorus maculatus is a stunning variation of Platy, instantly distinguishable by its iridescent blue and red body with black speckles. Platyfish are livebearers so be mindful of mixed sexed groups as they are prolific breeders.
For whom is the Calico Blue Coral Platy suited?
The Calico Blue Coral Platy is suited for both beginner and experienced aquarists thanks to their hardy nature, friendly temperament, and ease of care. Small and conveniently sized, they can thrive in both small and large tanks and are safe to pair with other peaceful fish.
What are they like?
Platyfish are highly active, friendly fish who love to investigate their surroundings and
therefore could disturb any docile tankmates. Their inquisitive nature and active lifestyle make them fun to observe and enjoyable to keep. The Calico Blue Coral Platy is best kept with groups as a naturally schooling fish, and looks particularly impressive when swimming as a unit thanks to their vibrant colors.
The ideal conditions for the Calico Blue Coral Platy
Native Central America and Mexico, the Calico Blue Coral Platy prefers a heavily planted aquarium with a sandy substrate filled with lush flora and floating plants to provide comfortable hiding spots. Platyfish typically occupy all levels of the tank but enjoy swimming in the open water, so provide enough space for regular activity. Platyfish aren’t afraid to jump, so ensure a tight lid is fitted in case they decide to escape.
What we feed Platyfish
We feed our fish a mix of frozen, live and prepared foods including live baby brine and black worms. We also supplement their diet with a mix of Northfin Veggie, Community and Bug Pro.
Our Tank Parameters
The fish are just as described. Great colors and showed up nice and healthy. Customer service was great too. I emailed and asked them to hold off on shipping for a week because of single digit temps and they helped me out.
The calico blue Platys were a great choice for my community planted tank, they are the peacocks amongst the flashy white cloud minnows, the three of them schooling from top to bottom are so colorful!!
Healthy and gorgeous fish, they look more amazing than the photo. Absolutely no issues and the staff is very prompt and friendly.
