The Benefits of Amano Shrimp in Your Aquarium | Algae Control

Amano shrimp are a fantastic way to start your journey into shrimp-keeping. Known for their excellent algae-cleaning abilities and hardiness, these shrimp help keep aquariums clean and are easy to care for, even if you're new to the hobby. They can adapt to different water conditions and get along well with other tank mates, making them a popular choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Native to Japan and Taiwan, these shrimp were introduced into the aquarium hobby by Takashi Amano in the early 1980s. They have since become a favorite among planted tank enthusiasts for their exceptional algae-eating capabilities and peaceful nature.

Natural Algae Cleaners

One of the primary reasons Amano Shrimp are so popular is their voracious appetite for algae. These shrimp are known to diligently graze on various types of algae that can plague an aquarium, including green algae, hair algae, and even sometimes the dreaded black beard algae. However they aren't as good at eating algae off flat surfaces as snails are but by consuming algae, Amano Shrimp helps maintain a clean environment, reducing the need for chemical treatments and labor-intensive cleaning.

Aquarium Compatibility

Amano shrimp are an excellent choice for community tanks due to their peaceful disposition and ability to coexist with a variety of tank mates. They can comfortably live alongside small fish species, snails, and dwarf freshwater shrimp without causing harm. Their ability to thrive in diverse water parameters makes them versatile additions to almost any aquarium setup.

Appearance and Behavior

Growing up to 3+ inches in length, Amano Shrimp display a clear body coloration that can change during breeding to hues of red, blue, and green. This unique coloration adds a dynamic aesthetic element to any tank. These shrimp are highly active and constantly foraging, making them both interesting to watch and effective at keeping the aquarium clean.

Diet and Feeding

In addition to algae and natural biofilm, Amano Shrimp should be fed other food as well. Providing a balanced diet ensures that they remain healthy and active. A steady source of algae and supplemental feeding will keep them satisfied and effective in their role as tank cleaners.

The foods we recommend for Amanos are

NorthFin Foods - Community, Bug Pro, Veggie, Kelp Wafers

Shrimp Envy - Food Fight, Growth Envy, Shell Envy, Complete Envy
