Black Devil Spike Snails are extremely hardy freshwater snails. Also sometimes referred to as Lava Snails, they're great at algae and substrate cleaning! These are seriously an underrated option if you’re looking for a larger, more active snail.
They have long spike shaped shells that range from rich chocolate brown to a deep, glossy black. When fully grown, they typically reach 2-3 inches, so they do best in tanks with some open space rather than heavily planted or overcrowded setups.
Black Devil Spike Snails naturally come from brackish waters in parts of Asia, including Thailand, but they adapt very well to freshwater aquariums. While they can live long term in freshwater, they will only breed in brackish water, so population control is not a concern.
Compared to Giant Sulawesi Snails, these tend to be more active and move around the tank more. They are peaceful, shrimp safe, and do well with other non-aggressive tankmates! While they primarily graze on algae and detritus, they may occasionally nibble on softer live plants.
