While most plants of the Alternanthera family are somewhat challenging to grow, the Alternanthera reineckii is actually relatively easy, making them rather suitable for Aquarists of all experience levels. However, while these plants will grow in most set-ups, they do reward those who put a little bit of extra effort into their care with thicker, more vigorous growth and more vibrant colours.

The Alternanthera reineckii is a popular ornamental plant due to the vibrant details of its leaves, and are also fantastic for aquaria with small fry. Their leaves provide them with protection against slightly more aggressive fish in your aquarium. They will provide the water with additional oxygen to allow the wildlife in your tank to thrive.
The ideal conditions for the Alternanthera reineckii
As mentioned before, the Alternanthera reineckii can survive under suboptimal conditions, though they will reward those who put a little bit of extra effort into their care. They do best in soft, slightly acidic water at a temperature of 68 – 82 °F, and while they can do just fine with moderate lighting, their colours will become more vibrant under more intense lighting. Keep in mind that these plants are slow growers, so it might take a while before they reach their maximum length of approximately 20”!
