The Super Red Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp. “Super Red”), also known as the Bushynose or Bushymouth Pleco, is a peaceful freshwater fish native to the rivers of South America. Named after their distinctive moustache-like whiskers, the Bristlenose is undoubtedly hard to miss and extremely fun to watch. Our Super Red Bristlenose has a gorgeous bright orange body with red speckles that develop as the Pleco matures – ideal for adding color variation to your tank. Growing up to 6 inches in length with a long lifespan of up to 12 years, the Bristlenose Pleco is an excellent choice for family aquariums.
Who Is Suited To Bristlenose Plecos?
The Super Red Bristlenose is a low-maintenance freshwater fish with a stunning
appearance. Their hardy yet peaceful nature makes them popular with both beginner and experienced aquarists, bringing a vibrant pop of color to the tank.
What are they like?
Plecos are a wonderful addition to any community aquarium. Their laidback character is well suited to pairing with guppies and tetras, and they will often ignore fellow tankmates throughout the day. Male Plecos are known to be somewhat territorial towards each other, so it’s best to keep only one or provide ample hiding spots to reduce stress.
The ideal conditions for the Super Red Bristlenose Pleco
Bristlenose Plecos are happiest in highly oxygenated aquariums with ample vegetation, fast-growing plants and moderate water movement. As algae and biofilm eaters, Plecos will benefit significantly from natural woods and organic structures in their tank, as well as rocks and driftwood pieces to provide cozy hiding places when required.
What we feed Plecos
We feed our Plecos a mix of Northfin Veggie and Community foods. Their main food is Northfin Kelp Wafers and unsalted green beans.
