Crystal Red Shrimp, commonly called CRS Shrimp, are one of the most recognizable Caridina shrimp in the aquarium hobby for their bright red and white patterns that REALLY stand out against green plants, moss, and darker substrates.
Crystal Red Shrimp are a selectively bred red variation of the Bee Shrimp and are a great option for hobbyists looking to get into Caridina shrimp. They do require more specific water parameters than Neocaridina, but once you have the right setup dialed in, keeping CRS can be incredibly rewarding!
The Crystal Red Shrimp you receive will generally be subadults around half an inch in size. Our CRS Shrimp typically range from S to SS grade in pattern.
Keep in mind that shrimp coloration and appearance can be affected by the stress of shipping. They may arrive looking lighter or less colorful than expected but should begin showing better coloration as they settle into their new aquarium.
If you're new to Crystal Red Shrimp, the grading system can be a little confusing at first. CRS are commonly graded from SSS, SS, S, A, B, to C
Generally, higher grades have more white coverage and more defined patterns, while lower grades tend to have more red. For example, a C grade Crystal Red Shrimp may be mostly red, while an SSS grade shrimp can have significantly more white.
Pattern isn't the only thing that matters, though. The quality and opacity of the red and white coloration can also affect the overall appearance of the shrimp!
Crystal Red Shrimp care is a little different from keeping Neocaridina shrimp. CRS prefer soft, slightly acidic water with very little KH, which is why we keep ours in remineralized RO/DI water with an active substrate.
Stability is especially important with Caridina shrimp. Rather than chasing an exact number every day, focus on keeping your aquarium established and your water parameters consistent.
We also recommend adding Crystal Red Shrimp to a mature aquarium with plenty of biofilm and natural grazing surfaces. Moss, driftwood, botanicals, and other aquarium plants give them places to explore and graze throughout the day.

A shrimp focused aquarium is going to give CRS the best chance to thrive and reproduce. Matten filters are especially nice for shrimp tanks because they provide gentle filtration while creating a HUGE surface area for biofilm and microorganisms that shrimp can graze on.
Crystal Red Shrimp spend a lot of their day grazing on biofilm, algae, and microorganisms growing throughout an established aquarium, but they should still be offered a quality shrimp food.
We like to provide a varied diet and avoid overfeeding. With shrimp, more food isn't always better! Uneaten food can quickly affect water quality, which is especially important to watch in a Caridina shrimp tank.
If your goal is to build a thriving Crystal Red Shrimp colony, we recommend keeping them in a shrimp only aquarium. Fish may be perfectly peaceful around adult shrimp and STILL decide that a tiny baby shrimp looks like lunch
