Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish

Rendering loop-subscriptions

The Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecoxis) is a popular smaller rainbowfish with blue iridescence sides.  The male’s fins are red/orange in color making the fish standout in any aquarium.  They come from New Guinea, Indonesia. These are captive raised. They are perfect community fish with other similar fish.

They grow to the adult size of less than 3 inches.  They make a perfect addition to a 20-gallon tank or larger with like sized calm fish.  They enjoy being around live plants, so those are a plus. It is encouraged that they be kept in groups of 8 to 10 so they feel comfortable in their aquarium. In a group of males and females, the males will have brighter colors as they display to the rest of the group.

Please Note: All fish shipments have a 100% Live Arrival Guarantee when shipping with Overnight (1 Day) option. All other options void our Live Arrival Guarantee for fish.

To replicate their natural habitat, the use of rock work, plants, and driftwood should be included in the aquarium. They also enjoy tannins in their water, so the use of Indian Almond or Guava leaves is highly recommended. They enjoy having a shaded aquarium so keeping floating plants is encouraged to cut down the light reaching them. We would not recommend keeping this fish with shrimp colonies due to the likeliness of the dwarf neon rainbowfish eating baby shrimp and potentially picking at adult shrimp.

The scientific name for the dwarf neon rainbowfish is: Melanotaenia praecoxis

They are omnivores by nature. We feed our dwarf neon rainbowfish a mix of frozen foods including daphnia, baby brine, cyclops, and bloodworms.

Healthy fish

If you are on the fence about buying these, get off that fence and buy them. Came in fast, healthy, and active. Zero losses and still doing great a week later. Good mix of male and female which is what I wanted. Wish you guys sold some larger Rainbowfish species. Maybe in the future, but for now, if you are looking for Preacox Rainbowfish these won't disappoint.

Great fish in great condition

I’ve had the fish for a little over two weeks now and they’re all thriving in my community 20 gallon tank. The overnight shipping was expensive but definitely worth it. I also bought 3 peacock gugeons and they’re absolutely beautiful fish. Also understand that when you first get the fish they tend to be a little pale but this is only because of the stress of shipping and that after a week or so their color will return (given your water parameters are sufficient and other contributing factors) and the fish will look extremely vibrant. Thanks flip aquatics!

Great little fish

All arrived very healthy and active. This is my first foray into rainbow fish and the colors they show can’t really be appreciated until you see them in person. Once these ones get settled in I’ll probably order some more.
