Also known as the Sumatra Barb, the Tiger Barb or Capoeta Tetrazona is a tropical freshwater fish with striking body coloring and a bold personality to match. Easily distinguishable by its dark vertical stripes, similar to those of a tiger, the Tiger Barb also fashions vibrant orange and gold highlights across its fins and body. Groups of six or more are advised to reduce the likelihood of your Tiger Barb upsetting its tankmates.
Tiger Barbs are a fun to watch species, making them a popular choice for owners. These active fish enjoy swimming at high speeds in schools and look beautiful on display. Be wary of their aggressive tendencies, however. Tiger Barbs are known to be nippy towards fish with long, flowing fins and therefore not a good choice for community aquariums. Pair the Tiger Barb with similarly speedy companions and fish that fare well amongst boisterous personalities.
Despite their naughty nipping behaviors, Tiger Barbs are generally very easy to care for and so can be a great option for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Reaching up to three inches in length and living for up to seven years, Tiger barbs are conveniently sized tropical fish with longevity suited for hobbyists and families.
Native to Southeast Asia, Borneo and Malaysia, Tiger barbs are most frequently found
inhabiting quiet rivers and tributaries. They prefer living in tanks with thick vegetation to mimic their natural habitat with soft, slow moving water and ample lighting. Water should be clear and highly oxygenated with large open areas for swimming.
Tiger Barbs are omnivorous fish that thrive best on a varied diet. They will happily take
pelleted or flake food alongside munching on small aquatic invertebrates but be cautious of their insatiable appetite! We supplement their diet with a mix live foods such as baby brine, Daphnia, Bloodworms, Blackworms and also Northfin Veggie, Community, and Bug Pro prepared foods to ensure a balanced and nutritious diet.
