Lovingly named due to its bright orange head, shimmery white body and sharp tail fin, the Santa Claus Swordtail or Xiphophorus helleri are a rare freshwater species with fascinating Koi-like colorations. Its unique appearance and peaceful disposition make it a perfect choice for all aquarists. Swordtails can grow up to three inches long but due to their longer fin, it’s best to avoid pairing your Swordtail with other fin-nipping species.
The Santa Claus Swordtail is an ever-popular choice due to its striking appearance, peaceful disposition, and adaptable nature. They are naturally sociable and prefer to live in groups, thriving best in community aquariums where no tiny fish are present. Male Santa Claus Swordtails can become competitive so we recommend limiting numbers in comparison to females to prevent squabbles.
Hardy and adaptable, this unique Swordtail can be a great option for both beginners and intermediate hobbyists. They are very undemanding creatures, easy to care for, and can be kept in community aquariums. Growing to around three inches long, Swordtails are a convenient size for both small and large tanks.
Indigenous to Mexico and Central America, the Santa Claus Swordtail is typically found in fast-flowing streams, springs, and rivers with diffused light. Their tank doesn’t require much vegetation however they do appreciate floating plants and wood structures to dim direct lighting, making them feel more comfortable. Ensure your water is highly oxygenated and the tank has a secure lid.
Swordtails prefer and omnivores diet. We feed a mix of live foods including live baby brine shrimp, blackworms, bloodworms, and Daphnia. We supplement their diet with Northfin Veggie, Community, and Bug Pro to ensure a balanced and nutritious diet.
My fish came on time before Xmas. Making my tank ready for the holidays. Love my fish
Received my order last week from Flip Aquatics that included Santa Claus swordtails. Very beautiful and healthy fish! They were packed very well, and I received the ratio of males/females that I asked for. They really pop in my tank with their contrasting vibrant red and white! Great experience and I will definitely order from Flip again.
Nice fish, but very small
All fish arrived alive and healthy, been in tank a few days all alive and well/ already made another order
