Named after its dark ‘eye patch’ behind the gills, the Red Phantom Tetra or Hyphessobrycon sweglesi is very similar to the Black Phantom Tetra, though they originate from different habitats. This fish is a beautiful tropical fish that is well suited to community aquariums. Often chosen for their unique markings and glittery sheen, the Phantom Tetra sports a bright reddish-orange iridescent body accented with lovely feathery fins.
Phantom Tetra is a peaceful freshwater species that tend to occupy the middle layer of the tank. They are naturally social and thrive in large schools, often found in groups of thousands at a time in the wild. It’s best to keep Phantom Tetras in mixed-sex groups of eight or more, alongside other non-predatory species to ensure a thriving community. Avoid pairing with slow swimmers as they are known to overeat their fair share of food.
Red Phantom Tetra is easy to care for, growing up to 1.5 inches, and are surprisingly hardy making them a good option for beginners. They are hardy fish by nature but can be sensitive to changes in water conditions. They are very active in the aquarium and are a pleasure to watch as they school together.
The Red Phantom Tetra originates from the Orinoco River basin in South America preferring still and slow-moving water conditions. To best replicate their natural habitat, ensure tank water is highly oxygenated with a slow current. Sand and gravel substrates are recommended, and pair with floating plants, branches, and dense vegetation to provide safe spaces to hide.
Tetras are naturally omnivorous, feeding predominantly on small invertebrates,
crustacea, algae, and fruit. We feed a mix of live foods including live baby brine shrimp, blackworms, bloodworms, and Daphnia. We supplement their diet with Northfin Veggie, Community, and Bug Pro to ensure a balanced and nutritious diet.
