The Honeycomb Bristlenose Pleco, also known as the L519 Rio Itenez Bristlenose Pleco, is a rare and highly sought after Ancistrus species discovered in 2019! Native to the Río Iténez in Bolivia, this small pleco is admired for its cool honeycomb pattern and subtle orange coloring that develops as it matures.
Juvies typically start out brown, but as they grow, they develop a beautiful pattern across their body. Like other bristlenose plecos, males will develop bristles on their faces as they mature, giving them their signature “bushynose” look but unlike common plecos, L519 Bristlenose Plecos stay small, reaching only about 3.5 inches as adults. This makes them a perfect choice for hobbyists with nano tanks!
Honeycomb Bristlenose Plecos are hardy and adaptable, making them great for newer hobbyists who want something unique. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water and appreciate clean, well oxygenated aquariums with moderate water movement.
They are naturally nocturnal and need plenty of hiding spots during the day. Driftwood is especially important, as it provides both grazing surfaces and natural shelter for them.
Botanicals like Indian almond leaves, alder cones, and guava leaves help encourage biofilm growth and create a more natural environment for them. These additions not only enhance the look of the tank but also support long-term health and natural foraging behavior of your fish.
We feed our Plecos a mix of Northfin Veggie and Community foods. Their main food is Northfin Kelp Wafers and unsalted green beans.
