These three fascinating freshwater fish species are perfect for any tank. These little swimmers might be small in size, but they're big in personality and color. Get ready to learn all about these amazing aquatic creatures and how to care for them in your underwater oasis!
Native to Papua New Guinea, the Peacock Goby is a vibrant and compact fish, reaching 3 inches in size and thriving in water between 72–78 °F. It’s best to mimic their natural environment—tannin-stained water (using Indian almond leaves), sandy bottoms with driftwood, and a few smooth rocks for breeding. They do well in groups and pair nicely with Cardinal tetras or Neon tetras. Feed them a varied diet of NorthFin flakes, live baby brine, and more. These little gobies add splashy color and constant activity to any tank.
This small yet striking killifish hails from Mozambique. Males feature electric-blue fins and vibrant body patterns. Because they’re known jumpers, they need a well-covered aquarium. In the wild they prefer still, stagnant water, so avoid placing them in tanks with strong currents—too much flow can exhaust them.
A stunning African species, Gardners Killifish inhabit swampy ponds with still water. Adult males grow to about 2½ inches, showing off a turquoise-blue body with red spots; females are browner with fewer spots. They prefer well‐aged water and also require a lid to contain their occasional leaps. They can live peacefully with other calm species and shrimp, but be mindful of competition for food and potential predation on very small tank mates.
In summary, the Peacock Goby, Bluefin Notho, and Gardners Killifish are fantastic choices for nano and small aquariums. They’re colorful, active, and relatively easy to care for—set up their environments correctly, and you’ll have a vibrant underwater display to enjoy!
