Methylene Blue | Aquarium Treatment

Methylene Blue is a commonly used aquarium treatment that helps protect fish, fish eggs, reduce fungal growth, and support fish during stressful situations. It’s often used in breeding setups, quarantine tanks, and hospital tanks where extra support is needed.

This treatment is especially popular with breeders, as it can help prevent fungus on fish eggs and improve hatch rates when used correctly. Methylene Blue can also be used in quarantine or hospital tanks to help reduce stress and support fish recovery. It is not recommended for use in established display tanks, as it can stain silicone, decorations, and negatively impact beneficial bacteria.

Common Uses for Methylene Blue

  • Helps prevent fungus on fish eggs
  • Used in breeding setups to improve hatch rates
  • Supports fish in quarantine or hospital tanks
  • Useful during transport or stress recovery
  • Treats external fungal issues when used properly

Dosing Instructions

  • Standard Treatment:
Use 10 drops per gallon or 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons to achieve approximately 3 ppm Methylene Blue.
  • During Treatment:
Remove chemical filtration such as carbon while treating.
After treatment is complete, replace carbon if needed to help remove the medication.
  • Dip Use:
Methylene Blue can also be used as a short dip.
Mix 5 teaspoons per 3 gallons of water.
Dip fish for no more than 10 seconds, then return them to clean, conditioned water.

Methylene Blue is best used in quarantine, hospital, or breeding setups and is not recommended for display tanks due to staining and its effect on beneficial bacteria.
