The Green Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) is a peaceful livebearer from the rivers and streams of Mexico and Central America. Adults reach about 5 to 6 inches. Males grow a long “sword” on the lower tail fin. They’re active swimmers and do best in larger tanks with open space to to swim.
We recommend keeping Green Swordtails in groups, with two females to each males to reduce stress. Swordtails are livebearers so they will readily breed with little effort. They can also be kept successfully in male only tanks without issue. They’re great community fish for planted aquariums while plant will also add cover for babies if you plan to breed them. Note that they may eat very small shrimp or their own fry, so choose decor and tankmates with that in mind.
