The Empire Gudgeon (Hypseleotris compressa) is a peaceful fish from Australia, south-central New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. It grows to about 4–5 inches. Males show neon reds, blues, and greens and develop a rounded head, especially when breeding. Females stay more muted in color.
Empire gudgeon fish are best kept in small groups of three or more in a planted tank with rocks, driftwood, and hiding spots. They can jump, so use a tight lid or lower the water level to keep them safe. Empire Gudgeons are carnivores that do best on frozen foods and live daphnia. They will likely eat baby shrimp or fry, but they’re usually fine with larger, peaceful community fish.
