What are Bamboo Fan Shrimp : Oddball Shrimp

Fan shrimp, also known as Atyopsis moluccensis, are a species native to the freshwater streams and rivers of West Africa and South America. They offer fascinating behaviors that captivate both novice and experienced fishkeepers alike.

In this blog post, we will explore the unique characteristics of fan shrimp, including their feeding habits, compatibility with other tank mates, ideal tank conditions, and the joy they bring to an aquarium setting. Whether you're considering adding them to your tank or are simply curious about these fascinating creatures, read on to discover everything you need to know about fan shrimp.

Unique Feeding Habits

What sets fan shrimp apart from other shrimp species is their method of feeding. They possess long claspers that they use to catch food particles carried by water currents. To cater to their dietary needs, we feed our fan shrimp a variety of high-quality food like Glasgarten’s Bacter AE. Additionally, pellet foods can be ground into a fine powder for them to easily consume, for this method we use a variety of NorthFin foods like Community, Kelp Wafers, etc.

Compatibility and Community Tanks

Fan shrimp are non-aggressive, making them ideal inhabitants for community tanks. They coexist peacefully with other invertebrates and non-aggressive fish, provided they have adequate cover to hide in after molting. We recommend keeping them with nanofish species such as small danios, rasboras, and tetras.

These shrimp can grow up to six inches in length and display a variety of colors including red, brown, green, white, and blue. Interestingly, their colors can change throughout the year, often in relation to breeding seasons.

Ideal Tank Conditions

Creating the perfect environment for fan shrimp involves providing a moderate water current, which aids in their feeding process. In our setup, we use pool filter sand as a substrate and a Matten Filter to ensure a steady, moderate flow. Driftwood and Indian almond leaves are added to the tank to provide resting spots and cover, enhancing their habitat.

Tank Parameters

pH: 6.6 to 7.9

Gh: 6 to 16

Kh: 1 to 6

TDS: 130 to 300

Temp: 70 to 84

Incorporating fan shrimp into your aquarium not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also introduces an element of natural wonder that few other species can provide. These fascinating shrimp, with their unique filter-feeding habits and vibrant color variations, offer endless opportunities for observation and enjoyment. Their peaceful demeanor makes them ideal tank mates, ensuring a harmonious environment that benefits all inhabitants.

Ultimately, fan shrimp are more than just another addition to your aquarium; they are a source of endless fascination and conversation. Whether you are captivated by their feeding techniques or charmed by their peaceful nature, these shrimp will undoubtedly become a highlight of your aquatic community.

So, if you want to add a touch of the extraordinary to your aquarium, consider the fan shrimp. Their remarkable behaviors and stunning appearances will provide endless enjoyment and a deeper connection to the aquatic world.
