Purple Zebra shrimp or Potamalpheops sp. Purple Zebra are a small dwarf shrimp species. These shrimp originate from Asia in freshwater to brackish streams. They thrive in brackish water conditions, but can live in freshwater conditions. However, they cannot breed in freshwater due to the larvae they produce will not develop in freshwater. They require brackish to saltwater conditions to transform from larvae to shrimplets.
Purple Zebra shrimp grow to only 0.25 inches in length and are very tiny. Their bodies are clear with pink or purple stripes. The females, once mature, will possess a saddle of green unfertilized eggs just behind their head. Once the eggs are fertilized, the females will carry the eggs in their swimmerets until they reach larval stage. Once the larvae are released, they take about a week to grow into baby shrimplets. Successful captive breeding has not yet been recorded.
These tiny shrimp do best in small species only aquariums. They are perfect for any nano desktop tank. They can be kept with other small inverts such as snails and shrimp. Make sure these little shrimp aren’t out competed for food. They will eat any shrimp specific food and biofilm. They prefer to have natural cover and surface area to graze on.
We keep Purple Zebra shrimp on pool filtered sand in a tank with a Matten Filter. We feed them Shrimp King and Glasgarten foods. In their tank we have Malaysian Driftwood and Cholla logs.
