When it comes to decorating your aquarium, you shouldn’t forget about moss! Moss is a fantastic way to add a bit of green and can provide both food and cover for fry. Phoenix Moss (or Fissidens Fontanus) is one of the most-used types of moss by Aquarists thanks to their unique appearance and forgiving growing conditions.
For whom is Phoenix Moss suited?
Phoenix Moss should be present in practically any aquarium, whether you’re a beginner or a more advanced Aquarist. As the scientific name Fissidens Fontanus suggests, their leaves look like that of a frozen fountain. This adds a lovely detail to the aquascape of your tank.
What are they like?
The Phoenix Moss will form beautiful green patches in your tank. They will always tend to grow in a rounded shape, no matter how you trim them, and will even grow on very slim surfaces such as branches. Additionally, the hillock can easily be moved around without damaging the plant itself in case you want to redecorate your tank.
The ideal conditions for Phoenix Moss
Phoenix Moss can grow fine in a lot of conditions. However, to really thrive, it does require at least moderate lighting conditions, as well as a water temperature of 68 – 82 °F at a slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH. One thing to keep in mind is that the Phoenix Moss definitely requires clean water, so a good filter is a must.
