Product Description

Mopani wood is a unique wood due to its largely contrasting 2-tone color combination of tan and dark brown. This contrasting color makes it a great addition to any aquarium needing some aesthetic properties. Mopani wood is one of the hardest woods used in the aquarium hobby and is very popular because it sinks immediately. These pieces of wood are great for attaching plants such as anubias and mosses to give your tanks a more natural look.

Mopani wood is also beneficial to your water just like other types of driftwood. It releases natural tannins in the water which can slightly discolor your water but lowers your pH. Tannins are good for your aquarium for several reasons

  • Prevent fungal and bacterial infections
  • Natural uric acid is released causing a lower pH
  • Lower pH helps with plant growth
  • Softens your water over time
  • Creates a place for biofilms to grow leading to natural grazing surfaces for fish or shrimp

To reduce the discoloring of your water you can soak the wood in a separate container and continue to change the water until it slows down or stops all together. Adding additional activated carbon to the aquarium filter after you add it to your tank can remove any excess tannins and clear up your water.

You will be receiving one (1) piece of Mopani wood or a pack of three (3) pieces of Mopani wood. Each pieces will be between 6 to 12 inches in length. All pieces of Mopani wood are unique in shape and size. We only send pieces that we would happily put in our own aquariums.

Beautiful, except for the fungus!

I was so excited when I received the wood. It was perfect for my aquarium. The tannin bleeding didn’t bother me, but on day 3/4, it was covered in a white slimy fungus (?). I read that it’s harmless, but I’m not enjoying the effect in my tank and the extra work to rinse it off, only to have it grow back. Hoping it will resolve with regular water changes!

Love it

Asked for a piece that would provide ground cover for my bichir and recieved a wonderful huge piece perfect for a hideaway. Thankyou

Not what I was expecting

I ordered mopani wood as a centerpiece for my 10 gallon tank. From the given information I thought it would be a perfect fit, but instead of receiving a large, swirling piece as pictured, I received two kind of boring, twiggy pieces. With some anubias nana and a little super glue I might be able to make a shady hut for my 5 gallon beta tank but I guess I'll have to be prepared to spend more than $20 to complete my 10 gallon. A little disappointed but 3 stars because I did find a use for the product and I am a fan of Flip Aquatics' partner Mike at AquaPros.

Small and growing slime all over.

I don't know what this slime is, but I am worried it could harm my fish. I have pictures as well. The entire wood is covered in clear slime. I also thought the pieces would be bigger but it seems I got the tiniest ones according to the reviews others placed. For the price I paid I definitely am not satisfied with this purchase.
